Several classes of new materials will make airships not only possible, but sensible as well.  Carbon Nanotubes, aerogels, and other light weight, high strength materials will revolutionize how we build and manufacture.  I look with delight towards a revolution in construction, especially of large scale structures such as bridges, skyscrapers etc.  Predictions have been made about entire highrises that weigh 6 pounds, through the use of carbon as structural material.  The first exposure we’ll see of these wonder materials, however, is in car panels and insulation.  Every brilliant new material seems to have to go through this mundanity curve.  For example, the builders of a brand new RepRap are reported to traditionally print as their first prototype, shot glasses with which to toast their success.  Someone made an aerogel ashtray.

In all likelihood, the emergence of these super, meta, uber materials will completely change everything, such that even the thought of building something to carry you through the air, rather than just flying yourself, seem ridiculous.

I would not want to sneeze in a room filled with nanobjects.
