Green Living Show update. Recycling is a lot of work.

The updated urban agriculture fence is pictured above below. We’ve decided to build the whole thing out of wood reclaimed from skids, or pallets. You can find them behind Home Depot, at Home Hardware, and art stores. Basically any place that gets large product deliveries will have piles of these things. And since it’s a hassle for the store/warehouse to dispose of them, they’ve been more than happy to let us haul them away. I’ve been working with Peter from J&B Landscaping to collect and disassemble the skids, and so far we’ve spent about 13 hours over two days to harvest about 600 boards. Considering our calculated need of about 2000 boards, it will take us approximately 3 more full working days just to break down enough skids for the fence. (keep in mind that we’ll need about 8 of these panels to make the fence.)

Why are we using skids?

I’ve been curious about using skids as building material for a while. Indeed, I’ve been experimenting with scrap for a while as well. You can find all sorts of projects that use skid board as material, but I was personally inspired by Faye Mullen’s Skid Collector project (http://theskidcollector.blogspot.com/), which I got to see at XPACE last year. The skid collector is a story of obsession, love and redemption, in which the principle characters are Faye(or you) and those forlorn, abandoned skids. With love, a sharp plane, bees wax (or danish oil, whichever you prefer), and some buffin’, those lowly mules of our supply chain industry were restored, nay raised to a nobility that they previously did not possess. In short, they clean up well.

However, I realized my folly on the first day, when, after 7 hours of hard labour, we had about 340 boards. It’s one thing to disassemble and restore 5 pallets. It’s quite another thing to dismantle, de-nail, trim the edges, cut to length, and plane 2000 pieces of board. I’m estimating that it will take well over 102 man hours just to harvest enough wood. I will post pictures of the refinished wood, as well as the work-in-progress fence.

SHIFT – A work in progress.

This is going to be an epic deja vu for my thesis, and redemption. I finally get a chance to put together a cogent interpretation of all the research and thinking that went into my thesis project. The draft is below, and it’s still very early alpha stage.

The following is a work of fiction. Any similarity to any person, or to any actual events, or institutions is intentional and

In 1937 the future of airships came crashing to the ground in a fiery, smoking ruin, amid the famous cries of “oh, the humanity!”.

Since the Hindeburgh crash in Lakehurst Naval Station, New Jersey, only the ghosts of these once important vehicles are seen: floating vestiges of the past above the Super Bowl, or largely ignored, hawking electronics above Queens and Manhattan. A few are still ferrying tourists on harbour tours and over vineyards for wine tastings, but they are largely seen as curiousities, if seen at all. In most of my conversations with people with airships, the first reaction is perplexity, then incredulity.

But everyone I have met agrees with me eventually, that airships are needed in this world again.

Route Nationale 3 is a lifeline for thousands of people who depend on the [World Food Program] for food. It’s also a kidney-bruising, stomach-churning morass of hills, holes, greasy mud and rickety bridges.

It seems to me that this image of the WFP truck, carrying vital supplies stuck in the mud, would be all the indication of failure that an organization would need.  Yes we can blame it on the road, as it was built in the 60’s and poorly maintained, but as the WFP should know best, disasters don’t always happen in areas well serviced by roads.  The WFP is doing its best and also repairing sections of the road so that future deliveries may go through more easily, but it’s not the WFP’s job to build roads.  It is its job to deliver food to starving people in some of the worst places in the world.  If the current methods don’t work, then it’s their responsibility to find ones that do work.  The problem of hunger isn’t going to go away in 50 years, so it’s still not too late:  GET AN AIRSHIP.

The services provided by UPLIFT should:

i. endeavour to remain neutral and non-partisan.  This includes the refusal to transport materials that may directly harm individuals or groups of individuals.

ii. avoid any situations where individuals or groups can be harmed or put at risk through refusal of service by UPLIFT.

iii. in the long term, improve the life quality of individuals and groups living in developing areas, and areas at risk of emergency and disaster.

iv. Be suited to the specific needs and requirements of these regions.

v. be made available to regions in need by the most appropriate and efficient means and as resources become available for the purpose and,

vi. actively promote peace and good governance.

Project UpLift: Airships for Humanity

– A UN sponsored airship program for flexible, efficient delivery of aid material and personnel.

– An advanced cargo airship with static lift control, zero emissions, capable of vertical take off and landing.

– Airship bases for staging materials, and to spur development by providing employment, training and trade.

– A solar – hydrogen economy for oil independence.

INTRODUCTION:

This is an update of my thesis project, you can see the previous presentation here for background.  Originally focused on the commercial passenger sector, I’ve now taken on the challenge of providing efficient and effective transportation in unstable regions.  I don’t see the airship as a standalone cure, but rather as an enabler for the various solutions that are needed in war, famine, natural disasters, etc. This blog will be mainly an effort to document my process more effectively, everything you see will consist mostly of sketches and maquettes and diagrams.  I appreciate all your comments.
